Subject Area Evolution and Systematics of Plants and Fungi
Term from 2004 to 2007
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5447745

Final Report Abstract

Based on study of over 1500 herbarium specimens and literature, an illustrated manual to the families, genera and species of liverworts and hornworts of Central French Guyana has been prepared. This work is the first of its kind for tropical America and a major tool for the identification of liverworts and hornworts of this part of the world. The work should be an invaluable tool for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies on tropical bryophytes as well as for biodiversity assessments of bryophytes in tropical rain forests and cloud forests. The project has also led to recognition of the "tropical lowland cloud forest", a new forest type which is currently being studied in the framework of the DFG project Fog climate and epiphyte diversity of the Tropical Lowland Cloud Forest of French Guyana.
