Structure parameters from 4D radar data for quantitative determination of areal precipitation

Subject Area Atmospheric Science
Term from 2005 to 2011
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5448359

A method will be developed to relate rain rates at ground to data from conventional weather radars and to other data sources. To this end, typical structures and parameters ¿ and combinations of them - identified mainly in the radar data and also in sets of non-radar data operationally available (as standard meteorological products) are quantified by appropriate measures. Quantification of structures and parameters will be done by taking into account mean values as well as variances where the latter reflect the large natural variability of precipitation situations. Based on these information correlations between the most important quantities (radar and non-radar) are established with the ultimate goal to specify rain rate at ground as depending on those quantities showing the highest correlation. Thus, it is expected that rain rate at ground is expressed by a combination of radar and non-radar data. The procedure outlined provides also a quality index indicating validity and limits of the relation to be derived for an actual precipitation event.
