Nahfeld-Mikroskopie und -Spektroskopie an biologischen und medizinischen Systemen

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2005 to 2010
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5448520

The main purpose of the proposal is to study local effects of electromagnetic fields in biological and medical systems using near-field microscopy and spectroscopy spanning a wide range of wavelengths from the microwave and millimeter range (GHz to THz) to the infrared range. This requires, an the one hand, the development of new highly efficient micron-size and submicron-size near-field probes to increase the resolution of these methods down to a single cell or a few cells. Ort the other hand, we plan systematic investigations an well-defined model systems at different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum giving complementary information which lead to new imaging methods and possibly new biomedical applications. The proposal is an international and interdisciplinary project with a large impact an a number of fields. Beside an extensive exchange of samples, scientists and know-how technicalities, a strong collaboration with the biology and medical departments is essential. The final goal of this trilateral proposal is to establish a vigorous research program in experimental physics and bio-medical research at Al-Quds University.
