The APEX Sunyaev-Zeldovich Galaxy Cluster Survey

Subject Area Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term from 2005 to 2012
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5449752

Final Report Year 2012

Final Report Abstract

In four years of observations with the APEX telescope, we have imaged the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect (SZE) from over 40 galaxy clusters, encompassing a wide range in cluster mass and redshift. Over 30 of these clusters were detected with high significance. The analysis of the full data set is still ongoing. In conjunction with X-ray imaging we have used our SZ maps to model the intra-cluster gas physics, we have been pursuing multi-frequency imaging observations to study the 3-D distribution of gas and cluster dynamics, and we investigated SZE “contaminants” such as starburst and radio galaxies. The SPP support allowed us to participate as a central partner in this project together with our North-American colleagues in the development of the science goals, the planning and preparation of the observations, acquisition of time with APEX and other telescopes, the development of advanced data analysis tools, the support of the observations in Chile, the data analysis, and the scientific analysis and publication of the results.
