The main purpose of the proposed research project is to explore the possibility of using biological molecules in nanoelectronic devices. We propose to construct a prototype single-molecule based ultra-high-density memory operating at room temperature. In this project the memory cells will consist of gold nanoparticles that will serve as quantum dots, embedded in the central cavity of a highly stable ring shaped protein. The gold nanoparticle-protein complex will be assembled in an array and attached to a conductive substrate. A conductive atomic force microscope (AFM) tip will be used to charge the nanoparticles (read/write). This is a Trilateral multidisplinary research project that includes exchange of samples and scientists and will lead to a strong collaboration between the partners institutions. In addition, this will enable the Palestinian partner and his group to advance in nanotechnology and construct the first laboratory in the field in The Palestinian Authority at Al-Quds University.
