This project aims to reconstruct past sea-level and atmospheric conditions of the Holocene North Sea using a nearshore and subaerial sedimentary record. Ground penetrating radar, highresolution sedimentological data, and a solid radiocarbon age model will be combined in a new genetic sequence stratigraphic framework for the dune-dominated northern barrier and spit system of the island of Sylt... The anticipated results will cast new light on the Holocene climate development with a focus on wind speed and wind direction in this part of the north Sea. The proposed project will provide new and previously not existing data to assess the formation of a highly dynamic environment such as the Sylt barrier island in the past and also to predict fucture progressions under global climate change.
