The research project is aimed at improving school science instruction by using models based on a theory of model-based teaching and learning, derived from Clement¿s (2000) theoretical framework. This theory contains a continuous stages of learning process from students¿ alternative models (or preconseptions), through intermediate models to targeted scientific models in the classroom. The research takes the position that pre-scientific models can be transferred into the use as intermediate models in helping students learn science. Thus, there are three elements that the research project is to investigate and integrate: students¿ alternative models, pre-scientific models and targeted scientific models. The research highlights the fundamental, yet abstract and difficult, physical concepts in the domain of thermodynamics, such as heat and temperature. Moreover, it seeks to bring in the cultural dimension by collecting date in two cultural contexts, Taiwan and Germany. It is argued that this may help us gain insight into the diverse ideas that people hold in different times and places and in turn provide us information of alternative perspektives and approaches concerning a specific issue or problem.
