Hybrid Thermoset Resins with In-Situ Produced Silicate Fillers

Applicant Dr. Sergiy Grishchuk, since 2/2009
Subject Area Polymer Materials
Term from 2005 to 2011
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5452940

Goals of this project are defined as indicated below: This project is aimed at developing novel thermosetting hybrid resins with in-situ filling and improved properties. Property upgrade targets not only the mechanical performance but also the thermal and flame resistances. This will be achieved by the combined action of resin hybridization and silicate filling. State-of-art polyisocyanate/water glass Systems will be hybridized with resins prone for crosslinking via (co)polymerization and polycondensation reactions, respectively. The expected property improvement is owing to the formation of simultaneous IPN and fine dispersion of the silicate particles produced in-situ. The novel hybrid resins of unusual characteristics (e.g. curing under wet conditions and even in water) are promising matrix materials for composites in various application fields (chemical resistance pipes, rehabilitation of sewerage etc.). Further, the characteristics of the hybrid resins can be tailored between rubbers and traditional thermosets via suitable prepolymers (polymeric methylendiphenylisocyanate, PMDI, and other prepolymers produced by exploiting the reactions of the polyurethane chemistry), and composition ratio of the hybrids.
