Final Report Abstract

In this project we further developed experimental approaches for in operando studies of growth and restructuring processes at metal electrode surfaces in electrochemical environment. In particular, we demonstrated in situ Grazing Incidence Small-angle X-ray Scattering as a technique for detailed quantitative studies of the nanoscale evolution of the electrode morphology. Studies of Au(001) homoepitaxial growth and Pt(111) surface restructuring via oxidation/reduction cycles by this method provided detailed insights into the potential-dependent microscopic mechanisms of these interface processes. Furthermore, we complemented our previous surface X-ray diffraction studies of Au and Cu electrodeposition by studies of Ag(001) homoepitaxy, the heteroepitaxial growth of Co and Co/Pd on Au(111), and the oxidation/reduction of Co and Pt. In the latter cases fruitful collaborations with other groups were started, where the methods and experimental setups developed in this project were applied to more complex phenomena that are of considerable current interest.
