Diradicals occur as short-lived intermediates in many photochemical processes and their properties can have a significant influence on the outcome of a chemical reaction. Due to their usually short life time, however, little is known about the details of their electronic structure and dynamics. Here we propose a first experimental identification and characterization of diradical intermediates occuring during light-induced structural transformations of organic molecules via ultrafast x-ray absorption spectroscopy.
