Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
In situ Sensormessungen direkt am Meeresboden von hydrothermalen Ventsystemen zeigten, dass die angesiedelten Lebensgemeinschaften gut an die Umweltbedingungen angepasst sind. Zum einen nutzen sie die direkte Anlieferung von Nährstoffen aus, um grosse Lebensgemeinschaften zu bilden, zum anderen sind sie aber auch in der Lage die Umweltparameter so zu beeinflussen, dass lebensfreundliche Umgebungen entstehen. Da die in diesen Meeresgebieten angesiedelten Organismen ausschliesslich von der durch die hydrothermalen Systeme angelieferten Energie leben, sind auch nur solche Gebiete besiedelt, an denen ein direkter Einfluss vorhanden ist. Dadurch nimmt die Besiedlung in den Randbereichen ab. Der diffuse Austritt von Ventfluiden ermöglicht den Muscheln und speziell ihrer Symbionten einen direkten Zugriff auf die in den Fluiden enthaltenen reduzierten Substanzen, wie Sulfid und Wasserstoff.
Die gleichzeitige Messung von Sulfid und Sauerstoff mehreren Zentimetern oberhalb der Sediment-Wasser Grenzschicht war erstaunlich, da man instinktiv eine sofortige Oxidation des ausströmenden Sulfides durch Sauerstoff erwarten würde.
