SFB 241:  Innovative Mechatronic Systems (IMES)

Subject Area Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Term from 1988 to 2001
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5474725

Since 1988 several institutes cooperate in solving problems for integrated mechanical electronic systems, where in addition to the mechanical functions an electronic information processing takes place. One goal is to develop today`s electromechanical systems to autonomous systems with integrated information processing. This transfer requires the solution of tasks like e. g. new sensors for turbulence or cavitation in turbomachinery and displacements in rotating tires. Furthermore the development of application specific microprocessors is required. The sensor signals act through the microprocessors back to the mechanical process, as e.g. in the case of pressure control of combustion engines or stall detection in turbo compressors. Examples for new mechatronic systems are electromechanical brakes and magnetic bearings. The cooperative research program treats an area which becomes increasingly important for mechanical and electronical engineering by considering the overall system from the very beginning. It is divided in four project domains with individual projects. It consists of 13 individual projects, which are divided in 4 process-oriented, actuator-oriented, sensor-oriented and microcomputer-oriented project areas.
