The common goal of the subproject is to analyze ciphers of home, their structure and function against the background of the conditions of their genesis, development and change. Using various source materials – illustrated art magazines, novels, their film adaptations and Heimatfilms – these visual ciphers will be analysed from the middle of the 19th century to the present day. The topographical focus is on the German-speaking world – also as the country of origin of the concept of home – and as a comparative foil on France (especially Provence).
