SFB 352:  Molecular Mechanisms of Intracellular Transport

Subject Area Biology
Term from 1991 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5478445

Molecular mechanisms are analysed of various intracellular transport steps in eukaryotic model systems - from yeast to mamalian cells. These include biosynthetic protein and lipid transport in vesicles, mechanisms of endocytosis, of cytoplasmic/nucleoplasmic transport, including localization of mRNAs, cellular organelles, like the plasma membrane and the peroxisomes, and molecular mechanisms of translocation through a membrane of proteins as well as of small molecules. In the latter case, the function of members of the family of ABC proteins is a focus. With molecular mechanisms underlying protein import into the endoplasmic reticulum and the function of this organelle in the unfolded protein response most of the organelles of a eukaryotic cell are investigated. Many of the projects are advanced to a level of structure/function analysis of proteins that will allow in-vitro reconstitution in the near future of the processes investigated.
