The interdisciplinary research within the Freiburg collaborative research centre 428 is aimed at tailoring structured macromolecular network systems for applications in materials and life sciences. Assembly and crosslinking of superstructures represents the key to the development of innovative and versatile polymeric materials and biosystems exhibiting novel property profiles. Structure formation is achieved by means of crosslinking of supermolecules, assembly of nanoparticles and supramolecular monomers, controlled phase separation of blends, assembly of proteins in biomembranes, and self-assembly of block copolymers, liquid crystalline polymers, and biomolecules. Novel methods in the fields of microscopy, rheology, rheo-optics, solid-state-NMR, light scattering, and polymer syntheses are being developed to produce network systems with nanoarchitectures and to understand their basic structure/property correlations.The spectrum of materials includes advanced structural materials as well as functional polymers and biosystems. Novel engineering plastics based upon blends with cocontinuous phases and nanocomposites exhibit skeleton-like superstructures and afford attractive combinations of stiffness, strength, toughness, and melt processability in injection molding. Functional polymers are tailored to achieve special optical, electrical, and biological properties, e.g. controlled transport in biomembranes. Smart polymer networks respond to signals and function as actors in new devices. Biomembranes with synthetic skeleton are developed for biomedical applications such as liposome-based controlled drug release systems and biosensors for medical diagnostics.
