SFB 470:  Glycostructures in biological Systems - Synthesis and Function

Subject Area Biology
Medicine
Term from 1997 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5480736

The programme is concerned with the function of carbohydrate derivatives in biological systems. By interdisciplinary projects the chemical and enzymatic synthesis are followed and questions as to structures and biological functions are addressed. Chemical and enzymatic procedures are employed to prepare complex oligosaccharides and glycoproteins. Further studies focus on the biosynthesis in pro- and eukaryotic organisms. Structural analysis is concerned with the sequential and the three dimensional shape of complex glycoconjugates. The role of glycolipids in the formation and stability of membranes is studied.Carbohydrate - protein interactions in biological systems and their molecular basis are surveyed employing cellbiological and in-vivo models with the use of synthesis and structurally assigned glycoconjugates.
