SFB 531:  Design and Management of Complex Technical Processes and Systems by Means of Computational Intelligence Methods

Subject Area Computer Science, Systems and Electrical Engineering
Term from 1997 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481300

With the continuously increasing complexity of technical systems, there is a growing need of robust design and control techniques, which are able to deal with imprecise, incomplete and partially incorrect information in dynamically changing environments. Computational Intelligence (CI) methods are especially suited to handle that kind of problems, which resists the treatment by classical exact methods from mathematics and computer science. In contrast to the traditional field of Artificial Intelligence CI makes use of subsymbolic, i.e. numerical, knowledge-representation and -processing.The collaborative research centre consists of twelve subprojects andtwo service projects. The subprojects are divided into threegroups. The research area B (transfer of methods) takes care for transferring the results achieved in the area A (theory) to the applications of area C. The actual topics of the collaborative research centre are evolutionary algorithms, genetic programming, fuzzy logic, neural networks and the application on fuzzy modelling of power plant control processes, quality assessment of integrated electronic systems, chromatographic separation of multicomponent systems, modelling of cutting processes and the automatic reconstruction of three-dimensional surfaces.
