SFB 446:  Mechanisms of Cell Behaviour in Eucaryotes

Subject Area Biology
Term from 1997 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481932

How cell behaviour changes in a context-dependent manner in response to developmental or environmental signals is being studied in animals, plants and yeast. This programme aims to identify mechanisms underlying the conversion of signals into cell behaviour. Projects in Theme A analyse predominantly cell behaviour as a feature of individual cells, including cases in which several or all cells of an organism behave the same way, e.g. in stress response, cell death, intracellular trafficking or activities at the cell surface. Projects in Theme B focus on cell behaviour as a function of cellular interaction. In some cases, this interaction is inductive or competitive, resulting in spatial differentiation among cell groups. In other cases, cell behaviour of adjacent cells is coordinated, leading to the establishment of functional units.
