SFB 403:  Vernetzung als Wettbewerbsfaktor am Beispiel der Region Rhein-Main

Subject Area Social and Behavioural Sciences
Term from 1997 to 2000
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481949

We focus our research on so called "thematic networks" which are realized by using modern communication technology and infrastructure (and which are "accelerated" by rapid developments of modern communication technology and infrastructure). For example, new forms of cooperative and flexible productions emerge. New possibilities for an increased productivity in public administration are visible. Also, new ways of co-determination and the individual respresentation of interests ("self-empowerment") come up. Our basic hypothesis is that the development and use of networks is a multi-dimensional process with particular effects on the competitive position of particular classes of actors (like enterprises, individuals, but also "regions"). A further hypothesis is that the developments of modern communication technologies and the increase of international competition will not result in a disappearance of traditional regions, but in an increased heteregenization of regional developments. We concentrate our research in three areas: Centralization vs. decentralization, standardization vs. individualization, regionalization vs. globalization.
