The main topic of the investigations of this collaborative research centre is the analysis of space-time structures from a physically theoretical, experimental and applied mathematical point of view. This has to be understood in the context of interdisciplinary research between physics, chemistry and biophysics. One of the main focusses is directed on questions of how to influence and control complex systems via feedback mechanisms and what will be the answer of the systems than. Furthermore the reaction of complex systems on external perturbations will be investigated.
The overall themes which pertain to our interdisciplinary work are: influence of global and non local coupling on structure formation; synchronization phenomena in chaotic and stochastic dynamics; control of excitable systems with external forces like light pulses or periodic and fluctuating signals; anomal correlations and diffusion in Hamiltonian and oscillator chains; microscopic modeling of processes which form structures on the basis of stochastic methods; development of optimization methods for nonlinear dynamics; bifurcation points and noise-induced transitions in conceptual model studies and space-time chaos in connection with noise; chaos control and control of processes forming structures via immediate and time-delayed feedback; theoretical preparation of elaborate experiments and observations respectively.
