SFB 548:  Analysis and modulation of allergic and autoimmunologic diseases

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 1999 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5483396

The collaborative research centre 548 focusses on two disease entities characterized by an immunological imbalance. Allergy and autoimmunity are based on a disregulation of immune reactions. Harmless substances in our surroundings induce allergies, while autoantigens are responsible for the induction of autoimmunological diseases. The collaborative research centre consists of 18 subprojects, which are located in the Department of Dermatology, the Department of Internal Medicine and the Institute of Immunology. Foci of research are the analysis of the role of accessory cells, especially of dendritic cells, in differential activation and modulation of allergic and autoreactive processes, the characterization of activation and regulation of allergen-specific and autoreactive T cells and of the cytokines produced as well as the therapeutic modulation of autoreactive and allergic immune processes in vitro and in vivo. Human cells and animal disease models are used in these studies. The major goal is to develop new strategies for the therapy of allergic and autoimmunologic diseases based on the analysis of the pathologic immune reactions involved.
