SFB 534:  Judaism - Christianity: Processes of Constitution and Differentiation in History and Modern Times

Subject Area Humanities
Term from 1999 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5483521

Collaborative research centre 534 focuses on the structural correlation between processes of constitution and differentiation of Jewish and Christian identity in antiquity and modern times. Section A (Antiquity - On the Origins of Judaism and Christianity) seeks to clarify the origins of the construction of Jewish and Christian identity. Its point of departure is to examine in which ways ethos and identity have corresponded in the respective communities. Section B (Modern times - Judaism and Christianity in the Context of the Shoa) deals with paradigms for the construction of Jewish and Christian identity in the 20th century. Both sections are closely linked by a common hermeneutical question: Are there concepts, ways of arguing and rhetorical strategies which serve similar purposes in discourse about Jewish and Christian identity in antiquity and today? In which way can the historical continuities or discontinuities be articulated so to be of relevance to the (self)understanding of Jews and Christians today?
