NMR console for an existing 600 MHz magnet including H/F/BB and diffusion probes

Subject Area Analytical Chemistry
Term Funded in 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 548811245

NMR spectroscopic developments and applications in photo-, organo- and ion pair catalysis are worldwide connected with the research taking place in the working group of Prof. Gschwind. In addition, their results in the field of Zintl anions, inorganic clusters and organometallic compounds are highly valued in the inorganic and organometallic community. All these projects had been conducted mainly on one 600 MHz spectrometer with a console, which is now ten years old. Combining last year an additional refurbished 600 MHz magnet in a very sustainable way with an existing more than 16 years old two channel console doubled the badly needed measurement time. However, the more than 16 years old electronic of this console cannot properly communicate with the advanced and modern probes necessary for the challenging research questions addressed. Therefore, in this proposal we apply for a modern three channel 600 MHz console as the future central NMR spectrometer for the research in the Gschwind group. The new console shall replace the more than 16 years old console at the stable and good working refurbished 600 MHz magnet. All the special measurements such as extreme low temperature down to 130 K, illumination, simultaneous UV-Vis detection and illumination, triple resonance with nuclear spin combination ranging from 1H, 19F, 31P, 15N, 13C to 29Si, 119Sn, 207Pb, 6Li, DOSY measurements, chemical exchange saturation transfer experiments, and relaxation studies, shall be conducted at the new console in the future. Furthermore, a H/F/BB probe as replacement for a ten years old probe is requested, which is badly degraded due to the low temperature stress. In addition, a diffusion probe is applied for to conduct diffusion measurements on heteronuclei required for the inorganic, organometallic and Lewis acid/base projects in the Gschwind group. The ten years old 600 MHz spectrometer shall be kept and used to extend the measurement time for all applications not cutting edge in terms of sensitivity, time resolution or modern pulse sequences. The working group Gschwind had and has numerous collaborations within the CRC 325 Assembly Controlled Chemical Photocatalysis, the RTG 2620 IonPairs in ReAction and the IDK Photo- Electrocatalysis and further cooperations with working groups in Regensburg, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the USA. Thus, the new console will not only allow to continue advanced NMR-spectroscopy in the Gschwind group but will support many other working groups and research projects.
