The mechanism of action of liver CD4+ T cells in autoimmune liver diseases remains unclear. By combining systems and experimental immunology, along with human samples and mouse experiental models, we aim to identify (i) the antigen specificity, (ii) the epigenetic profile underlying the plastic activation mechanisms and, finally, (iii) to test the in vivo function of liver CD4+ T cells. The long-term goal of this project is to discover molecular mechanisms to reprogram these cells from pathogenic to anti-inflammatory, taking advantage of their potential plasticity.
