Handbook Sociology of Violence

Subject Area Sociological Theory
Term since 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 553023897

The proposed academic network aims to compile a systematic and comprehensive German-language handbook on the sociological study of violence. The starting point of this project is the realisation that the sociology of violence has become significantly more differentiated, particularly in the last two decades, and that new approaches to the study of violence have been developed. In the course of this, however, the research landscape has become increasingly confusing. This concerns a) its social-theoretical approaches, which focus on theories of action and interaction, b) theories of society, c) the methods used and, last but not least, d) the objects studied. No comprehensive handbook systematically summarises the state of research and debate in this field and presents it so that even newcomers can quickly access the state of the art. The network will compile a corresponding publication within six meetings at different universities and in cooperation with guest researchers relevant to (violent) sociology and present to the scientific community at a final conference.
