The Tegenkamp group has been working successfully for many years in the field of complex nanostructures and material systems, often at the interface with chemistry, materials science and electrical engineering, and is particularly concerned with electronic transport properties in low-dimensional structures and quantum systems (single molecules, 2D materials, 3D topological insulators), with explicit consideration of the structure on an atomic scale. In addition to fundamental questions, such as metal-insulator transitions, ballistic transport channels or spin and charge density waves, we also conduct application-oriented research. Future work in the field of these complex nano- and quantum materials includes experiments on spin-polarized systems, phase transitions and instabilities in correlated systems, nano-structuring as well as the growth of modern materials in solid state physics. In the future, synthetic 2D quantum systems, quantum plasmonics, the functionalization of nano-systems and hybrid systems will play a central role. The acquisition of a TT 4-pp STM/SEM (low temperature 4-tip STM) system with optical fibers allows unique experiments on the atomic scale, which can be directly correlated with optoelectronic properties and transport behavior. The materials science focus of our working group and Chemnitz University of Technology is closely linked to an equipment focus at Chemnitz University of Technology on high-resolution microscopy, as illustrated by the new TEM center. The TT-4ppSTM system is intended to further strengthen this strategy and enable highly sensitive nanoelectromechanical investigations of low-dimensional structures.
