Computing cluster

Subject Area Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term Funded in 2025
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 561108999

Progress in understanding the exciting scientific questions of the origin and evolution of the Universe requires considerable computing effort. This includes producing theoretical models as well as extracting and interpreting observational and experimental data. The resulting computing and developmental needs in astrophysics, biophysics and particle physics therefore have increased significantly in recent years and will continue to increase in the future. To meet these ever-growing demands, the UNIVERSE Cluster of Excellence founded in collaboration with the Leibniz Computing Center (LRZ) the Center for Particle- and Astrophysics (C2PAP), which became operational in 2013 and was continued within the ORIGINS Cluster of Excellence. Since the beginning, it supported different science groups belonging to the Clusters of Excellence UNIVERSE and ORIGINS and allowed them to keep pace and harvest the progress of the continuously broadening developments in high-performance computing (HPC). The key personnel of C2PAP have expertise in all areas of scientific computing, such as high-performance computing, parallelization, algorithm development and novel computing architectures as well as further aspects of large-scale computing like usage of modern software packages, database design, data preservation and visualization. While these staff members are provided by the ORIGINS Cluster of Excellence, the hardware which was originally purchased within the UNIVERSE Cluster of Excellence now needs to be finally replaced. The new hardware will consist of several main components: (a) CPU Compute Cluster (52 Nodes 112 cores/Node 512 GB/Node) (b) GPU Compute Cluster (6 Nodes 40 cores/Node 768GB/Node, 4 GPUs/Node) (c) Data Science Storage component, 500TB, accessible with other LRZ infrastructure (d) Cloud Services (CPU/GPU to capture special needs, size to be set by requests) This new, foreseen C2PAP computing cluster will incorporate current needs of ORIGINS scientists and the need of the new ORIGINS data science lab. This is reflected in the mixture of the technical specifications of the computing nodes, the GPU partition as well as the operational concept as split in classical computing cluster and cloud based setup, which allows to incorporate additional services needed by the ORIGINS scientists. Receiving on average more than 30 project applications every year from ORIGINS Cluster scientists, this new, updated infrastructure for C2PAP will allow to continue to support numerous working groups to conduct their research within the growing and vastly changing technological landscape of high performance computing, data processing and data management.
