GAS AND DUST IN THE INNER COMA OF COMET 67P/CHURYUMOV–GERASIMENKO

Subject Area Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term since 2025
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 563030731

Project seeks to bridge the gap in methodologies and interpretations between space-based and ground-based observations of comets. To achieve this, data from the Rosetta mission's OSIRIS WAC camera archive will be utilized, focusing on observations of the inner coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, specifically the neutral gases and dust components. The approach involves partially adopting techniques similar to those used in ground-based observations, while accounting for the unique position of instruments located within the coma. The derived parameters of the coma from space-based data will be systematically compared with results from ground-based observations. The project also aims to examine seasonal variations in gas and dust emissions by analyzing pre-perihelion and post-perihelion observations. Furthermore, both the characteristics of the integrated dust coma and the properties of individual dust particles captured in the camera's field of view will be investigated.
