VetAnatOmnia – Indexing and presentation of 3D digitised domestic animal specimens as sources for education and research

Subject Area Veterinary Medical Science
Term since 2025
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 563200554

In recent years, the holdings of natural history collections have been reassessed. This is reflected in various national and international endeavors to index them digitally and to strive for a virtual integration of their holdings, which has resulted in several large-scale projects. However, domestic animals are only archived in few small veterinary anatomical collections and are only partially indexed. The large natural history collections have mostly excluded domestic and farm animals or only have marginal holdings of domestic animal objects. The VetAnatOmnia project aims to close the existing gap for domestic and farm animal specimens and thus complements the ongoing efforts. The project aims to index LMU Munich‘s anatomical collection of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, which has already been largely 3D digitized, with linkable metadata and to present it in an online portal. It also will be possible to integrate the models into learning platforms such as Moodle and thus support digital teaching. The metadata, enriched on the basis of the internationally renowned anatomical thesaurus "Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria", supplemented by the terms commonly used in English language literature as well as in zooarchaeological literature, will simultaneously be offered via SPARQL endpoint, thus supplementing the collection network via federated query options. The knowledge gathered during the project on digitization, workflows, transformations and presentation will also serve as a blueprint for further collection digitization and networking.
