The aim of project B3 is to establish a fine-grained taxonomy of the types of non-default common ground updates that are linked to Spanish mitigator uses and of their roles in different communicative settings. We plan to investigate the prosodic, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties of the most frequent mitigators by means of corpus analyses and prosodic analyses of spoken data as well as acceptability judgement tasks. A central issue will be to investigate the syntactic levels of operation of different types of mitigators and their role as possible facilitators of CG updates as well as the effects of mitigator uses for the status of updated CG content.
