Inorganic chemistry and structural chemistry of fluorine compounds of chlorine and bromine

Subject Area Solid State and Surface Chemistry, Material Synthesis
Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term since 2025
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 565357555

In recent years, we have discovered and characterized a whole series of new halogen fluoride compounds. We now want to further develop their inorganic chemistry and discover which cationic and anionic species still exist, with a particular focus on polynuclear species. We want to synthesize these specifically in substance and characterize the compounds by vibrational spectroscopy and by powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as by quantum chemistry in terms of chemical bonding. In this project, we want to concentrate in particular on the fluorine compounds of chlorine and bromine, as the instability of the lower iodine fluorides means that "unpleasant" redox reactions tend to take place and it is difficult to remove the iodine from the apparatus. The chemistry of iodine fluorides will therefore be the subject of another project.
