Strength Enhancement in Joining Fiber-Reinforced Plastics Through Formed Pin Structures (T05#)

Subject Area Plastics Engineering
Term since 2026
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 418701707

In the cohesive joining of short fiber-reinforced plastics, the joint strengths are significantly lower than the material strength. This is mainly due to a fiber orientation induced by squeeze flow, which aligns fibers perpendicular to the joining direction. Consequently, there is no fiber reinforcement between the two bonding partners, locally different stiffness additionally is reducing the bond strength. Goal of the project is to achieve a targeted influence on the fiber orientation by introducing pin elements in the bonding area, thereby creating a cross-bonding fiber structure. This approach aims to increase the joint strength beyond the currently achievable level.
