The aim of the project is to combine descriptive work and field research on the modern languages of the Indo-Iranian Frontier (present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan) with historical-comparative studies in order to gain a more comprehensive picture of the linguistic history and prehistory of the region. Three sub-projects are focused respectively on one of the Indo-Iranian subgroups Iranian, Nuristani and Indo-Aryan.
