This variable angle total internal reflection fluorescence microscope (VA-TIRFM) is intended to expand the research and teaching opportunities at the School of Life Sciences of the Technical University of Munich. The instrument allows detailed investigation of cellular structures at the nanoscale and the movement and organization of single molecules and population of molecules at the nanoscale in 2D and 3D. The instrument will enable the detailed analysis of the nanoscale dynamics and organization of key molecular actors of plant immunity and plant development, as well as of the connections between plasma membrane and the cortical endoplasmic reticulum and the cortical cytoskeleton. The instrument is to be integrated in the Center for Advance Light Microscopy (CALM) for the development of super resolution microscopy at the campus of the School of Life Sciences, making these technologies available not only to the applicants but also to all interested working groups at the Technical University of Munich. Such instrument will enable us to attract highly endowed third-party funding and provides excellent qualification opportunities for the young scientists entrusted with it. Importantly, the instrument will also be used for the training of students in imaging methods, which will significantly increase the quality of the courses offered. The acquisition of the instrument will set a new impetus for fundamental discoveries and open new horizons for the students at the School of Life Sciences of the Technical University of Munich.
