The project represents a catalysis-driven synthetic research program opening entirely new retrosynthetic disconnections to assemble multidimensional skeletons essential in organic synthesis, catalysis and materials. Thiophene derivatives, which are abundant and rapidly diversifiable, will serve as modular synthetic platform for the creation of 3D-structures such as cyclopropanes, spirocycles or cis-decalins. Given that increased sp3-hybridization enhances molecular properties crucial for clinical success, new methodologies are urgently needed to overcome challenges in stereoselective chiral centre installation offering multiple opportunities for drug discovery or crop science campaigns. At the same time, the targeted mutation of thiophenes into tailored 2D-frameworks holds immense potential for the development of next generation photocatalysts and ligands, driving advances in sustainable catalysis and fine chemical production.
