Chiral discrimination and structure determination by laser-induced electron recollision and diffraction (B07*)

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term since 2026
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 328961117

In this project, we investigate chiral molecules in strong laser pulses where electrons released by tunnel-ionization undergo field-driven dynamics and can collide with their parent molecules during the same laser pulse. Using momentum-resolved coincidence detection of electrons and ions, we plan to shed light on a previously observed but unexplained strong chiral effect in recollision-induced double ionization. We will also use the elastic scattering between the electrons driven by an elliptical field and the molecules to probe the chiral dynamics of photolysis and to determine the structure of a chiral molecule by analyzing the diffraction patterns.
