Project Details
The role of UTLS moisture for the extra-tropical mean circulation (B09*)

The interaction of UTLS moisture, moist-baroclinic eddies and the mean circulation will be investigated with idealized numerical experiments, which will be implemented in and performed with the ICON model. The formation of the modelled UTLS moisture structure will be assessed with diagnostics developed and applied in previous work. Further building on previous work, the impact on the large-scale circulation will be diagnosed using piecewise potential-vorticity tendency diagnostics, separating impacts of UTLS moisture, eddy feedback, and moisture-enhanced secondary circulations (warm conveyor belt outflow). The final synopsis of our complementing diagnostics will determine the relative importance of UTLS moisture in shaping the midaltitude mean circulation (in our experiments).
