Project Details
Role of the representation of gravity waves for downward transport from the middle atmosphere into the UTLS (C09*)
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
since 2026
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 428312742
This project focuses on the contribution of downward transport from the deep stratosphere and mesosphere to UTLS composition. The sensitivity of this contribution to the representation of gravity waves will be quantified by conducting gravity-wave-resolving global model simulations with UA-ICON and contrast them with simulations that utilize convectional and advanced gravity wave parameterizations. The role of different gravity wave processes for transport will be investigated. Idealized and selected realistic tracers will serve to quantify transport times and to evaluate the model results, respectively.
