This proposal concerns a high-performance computing (HPC) system to be installed at Paderborn University. Based on the DH.NRW state-level HPC strategy, the system is intended to ensure Tier 3 computing capacity for universities in North Rhine-Westphalia, supporting both scientific high-performance computing and applications in artificial intelligence. The system will focus in particular on computational workloads in physics and chemistry, as well as the use of machine learning and AI methods in computer science. The domain-specific Tier 3 HPC system (hpcFachCluster.nrw) will be operated at Paderborn University and jointly used by seven universities across NRW. In parallel, RWTH Aachen University is submitting a separate large-scale equipment proposal for a complementary HPC system with a distinct disciplinary focus. Both systems are intended as extensions of the existing HPC infrastructure in NRW. They will complement the offerings of the two Tier 2 NHR centers - PC2 and NHR4CES@RWTH - as well as the already approved, jointly operated Tier 3 base system (hpcBasisCluster.nrw) at the University of Cologne, which provides foundational HPC and AI services for the participating universities.
