Project Details
MALDI-ToF-Mass Spectrometer for Polymer Characterization
Subject Area
Polymer Research
Term
Funded in 2025
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 576200550
MALDI-ToF-MS is one of the standard analytical methods in preparative chemistry and is crucial for analyzing higher molecular weight compounds such as synthetic polymers, biopolymers as well as complex organic molecules. It enables the detection of molecular weights in the range 50-500,000 Da or higher and thus the analysis of molecular composition, molecular weights, dispersities and end groups of polymers. In addition, the analysis of monomer sequences and side chains of synthetic and biopolymers is possible with the help of targeted fragmentation. At the University of Freiburg (UFR), the instrument will be an essential component of the advanced polymer and material research, strengthening the research at various faculties (Chemistry, Pharmacy, Engineering) and University Centers (Freiburg Material Research Center (FMF), Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies (FIT)). In the present application, MALDI-ToF-MS is used in various specialist areas: the main use is by the groups in the field of preparative polymer chemistry developing new polymers for biomedical applications and sustainability solutions. The instrument will also support groups from material engineering developing advanced polymer-based material systems and devices as well as organic chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences developing new bioactive molecules and potential therapeutic approaches.
