Mobile Communication Based Decentralised Railway Dispatching with Swarm Intelligence (MoDeRaDi)

Subject Area Traffic and Transport Systems, Intelligent and Automated Traffic
Term since 2026
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 577389977

The main objective of this project is to design a concept of highly efficient train dispatching systems. To realize the main objective of this project, the operating quality for railway operations will be significantly improved: waiting time caused by hindrances between several trains are reduced since complex dispatching tasks are solved more efficiently, and communication restrictions do not lead to complete failure of scheduling. This goal is followed from two sides: The typical use cases and the evaluation criteria for decentralized train dispatching will be analysed. The swarm intelligence algorithm will be developed, in which the mechanism to derive operational situation and the workflow to solve conflicts for decentralized train dispatching are designed. Based on the designed algorithm, the definition of a swarm will be specified through parameter study and designed case studies. The performance requirements for train-to-train communication will be determined. The transmission of radio messages will be coordinated according to the swarm configurations. Efficient messages exchange will support the swarm building processes and will be in turn triggered and influenced by them. Thus, communication performance will be not only measured in terms of frame loss ratio etc. but related to the success of swarm building and swarm alignment. Optimized communication between trains enables the exchange of real-time data and thus flexible reactions to dynamic situations in rail transport. By achieving these objectives, an efficient and robust system for train dispatching will be created, improving both operational quality and communication between trains.
