Storage Extension of the de.NBI Cloud at Bielefeld University (NFDI-Speicher 2025)

The German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI) operates the largest aca-demic cloud infrastructure in Germany, the de.NBI Cloud. Since the foundation of NFDI, the de.NBI Cloud has been providing resources for research, services, and training to NFDI pro-jects spread over at least ten different consortia and three base services. The provision of guaranteed permanently available data storage capacities is a service yet missing in the portfolio of the de.NBI Cloud and, at the same time, highly demanded by the NFDIs to fulfil their mission as a sustainable research data infrastructure. Therefore, we want to extend the storage hardware of the de.NBI Cloud located at Bielefeld University by several storage units of a storage platform providing block and object storage. Both storage architectures will contribute towards an efficient usage of the data provided by the NFDIs. Whereas the storage system used for block and object storage is highly versatile and can serve the needs of many NFDIs, this proposal is especially tailored to the require-ments of the NFDI consortia NFDI4Biodiversity and NFDI4Microbiota both of which Bielefeld University is a member of.
