For a self-built phase contrast computed tomography (PCT) instrument, the liquid jet X-ray source is to be replaced as a crucial component for the required brilliance and partial coherence of the X-ray radiation. This is the central large-scale device that enables the translation of PCT from synchrotron radiation facilities to compact laboratory sources. In contrast to synchrotron radiation, this constantly available X-ray imaging capability is central to the institute's research programme and forms the basis for numerous third-party funded projects, in particular biomedical applications of PCT in the field of digital three-dimensional (3D) histology and pathohistology. By equipping the PCT instrument with the source, entire tissue blocks can be digitised at a resolution and image quality that is unattainable with commercial complete solutions.
