The laboratory press used in the Department of Forestry, Wood and Environment for the production of wood-based and bio-based materials was manufactured in 1984. The existing technology, electronics, and control system of the press are outdated compared to the current state of the art. For example, the current control system does not allow for distance-controlled operation. In addition, parts of the press are no longer functional, such as the pressure gauges in the hydraulic circuit, and there are leaks in the hydraulic and thermal oil circuits. The electronics are still based on the relay circuits that were common at the time and have had to be repaired several times during their service life, while the delivery of necessary spare parts is becoming increasingly difficult, if not impossible. Since the basic structure of the laboratory press, the press surfaces, and the press piston are still intact and show only minor signs of wear, the plan is to upgrade, modernize, and, in some cases, replace - the electronics and control system, including the safety devices, - the thermal oil heating system,- the hydraulic system - and mechanical wear parts. The possibility of upgrading the equipment means that the existing basic structure of the laboratory press can be retained. Furthermore, in the interests of sustainability, there is no need to purchase new equipment. Structural changes that might be necessary in the event of a new purchase due to different space requirements can also be completely avoided, allowing cost-efficient continued use of the laboratory press. In order to expand research opportunities in the field of bio-based materials and to reconcile this with the principle of sustainability, the applicant is seeking to upgrade and modernize the existing laboratory press.
