Fluorescence spectrometer (renewal)

Subject Area Analytical Chemistry
Term since 2026
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 584903033

The aim of the project is to secure and extend a central infrastructure for fluorescence spectroscopy that is essential for a wide range of material, biological and process related research questions. Fluorescence spectroscopy enables highly sensitive investigation of electronic excitation and emission processes and thus provides insight into structure, dynamics and function of complex systems on a molecular level. The planned upgrade ensures stable and reproducible detection of fluorescence signals over an extended spectral range from ultraviolet to near infrared. This allows quantitative investigation of both strongly emitting and very weakly fluorescent samples. Particular emphasis is placed on temperature dependent measurements, time dependent changes and the analysis of dynamic processes in liquid and solid systems. Scientific use includes sustainable materials, polymer based and hybrid systems, biological and biomimetic structures as well as functional fluorophores. Fluorescence spectroscopy serves as a reference and screening method to systematically analyse energetic transitions, interactions and structural changes. The results provide a basis for subsequent imaging or process analytical investigations. The upgrade establishes a reliable and long term usable platform that supports application oriented research. It enables the development of new measurement strategies, coupling with complementary optical methods and transfer of spectroscopic knowledge into practical applications such as process monitoring, sensor development and material optimisation.
