Interplay between the charge densitiy waves and superconductivity in transition metal chalcogenides
Final Report Abstract
In accordance with the aims and working plan of the proposals we have carried out extensive experimental investigations of transition metal chalcogenides by means of angle-resolved photoemission experiments. The main focus of the proposed studies was the possible connection of the charge-density waves and superconductivity. Our results pointed to the competing nature of interplay between two phases. It turned out that the conditions for realization of one or the other ordering phenomenon are similar as far as the low-energy electronic structure is concerned. The main requisite for realization of both phases is the high density of states at the Fermi level. If charge-density wave order wins, the superconductivity can occur only at significantly lower temperatures if the resulting state is metallic and superconductivity is not directly related to the peculiarities of the electronic structure above CDW transition temperature. On the other hand, upon entering the superconducting phase, CDW order is not possible because of the energy gap. This means that there is no direct relation between the mechanisms of charge-density waves formation and superconductivity. Another important result of the project is the identification of the enigmatic pseudogap state of cuprate high-temperature superconductors as a density wave state. This conclusion is made on the basis of identical spectroscopic characteristics of the CDW gap in transition metal chalcogenides and pseudogap in the cuprates. Numerous recent experiments on the cuprates have confirmed this conclusion drawn from our ARPES measurements five years earlier.
