Final Report Abstract

The goal of this project was to develop methods for reconstructing the time-varying, 3D density distributions in nonstationary gas flows, based on measuring the variations of the index of refraction using the background-oriented Schlieren (BOS) approach. To achieve this goal we have implemented a pixel-resolution BOS acquisition technique based on optical flow, developed a simplified procedure for capturing multi-video BOS data of nonstationary flows and contributed a tomographic reconstruction algorithm using a voxelized grid that requires considerably less BOS data. We validated the presented contributions with a rendering-based synthetisation method.
