Final Report Abstract

In the funding period, we have developed a range of new homoand heterometallic alkoxides that served as efficient molecular precursors for the synthesis of lanthanide-based nanocrystalline oxides (LONs). Specifically, homo- and heterometallic alkoxides of the general composition [Ln3(OtBu)9(HOtBu)2], [Ln{OC(But)3}3(THF)], ([LnAI(OPri)6(HOPri)]2 and [LnAl3(OPri)12] (Ln = Pr, Tb, Gd) were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The potential of those alkoxides as well as lanthanide oleates (Ln{OCO(CH2)7(CH2)(CH2)7CH3}3, Ln = Gd) as well-defined chemical precursors for the synthesis of LON materials was investigated. Lanthanide-containing hydroxide and oxide nanostructures (nanoparticles, nanorods and thin films) prepared by solvothermal method, sol-gel process and chemical vapour deposition techniques. The obtained materials were investigated with respect to their morphological properties (Electron Microscopy), phase (XRD) and optical properties (photoluminescence). With regard to the suitability of the obtained LONs for biomedical applications, namely as biomarkers, the cytotoxic behaviour of the obtained nanostructures was investigated by a series of in-vitro cytotoxicity assays.
