Final Report Abstract

During the recent funding period we were able to identify and to uncover the biochemical and physiological function of diverse vacuolar sugar transporters like SWEET17, SWEET16, BvIMP and BvTST2.1. We revealed that vacuolar sugar homeostasis is critical for plant yield, frost tolerance, sugar sensing and development. Moreover, vacuolar sugar homeostasis is an important element controlling the response of plants to modified N-availability. The VIK1 protein is the first kinase shown to interact with TST1 and by this controlling vacuolar monosaccharide import. We provided clear evidence for an interaction of VIK1 with further VIK isoforms, in particular with VIK5 and Vik6. There is evidence that a VIK network exists in Arabidopsis and it will be challenging in the future to decipher corresponding input and output signals. We were able to strengthen a fruitful cooperation to all other partners of our FOR. This cooperation was key to attract further funding, e.g. the BMBF sugar beet project. We are convinced that these cooperations will also in future facilitate our research and will lead to novel insight into plant sugar metabolism.
