Geodynamics of North-Victoria-Land, Antarctica, derived from GPS and micro-gravity measurements

Subject Area Oceanography
Term from 2008 to 2012
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 77412348

North-Victoria Land with the adjacent Ross Sea, Antarctica, is one main research area of the Federal Institute of Geosciences and Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR, Hannover). Within the previous ten GANOVEX expeditions BGR carried out air-borne and land based geophysical measurements. The main research goal of the GANOVEX expeditions is the evaluation of the relations of Antarctica to other fragments of Gondwana, especially to Australia and New Zealand. This research proposal concerns the intended cooperation of the University of Jena with the BGR within the ‘Schwerpunktprogramm Antarktisforschung’ regarding the GANOVEX XI expedition of BGR to Northern-Victoria Land. In continuation of the previous measurements during GANOVEX X the task of the Department of Geophysics of the University of Jena is again to carry out the gravity measure-ments at the points installed by the Italian group (Prof. Capra, Bologna) and to evaluate and interpret the data with regard to elevation and gravity changes due to tectonics and mass transport (ice) using the GPS-results of the Italian group.
